This scholarship is for students in the Baking & Pastry Arts, Culinary, or Hospitality programs with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Preference will be given to students working part time or more. Instructor recommendations will be considered for successful completion of program.
Impact
The Miljo in the 1950’s and 1960’s was the gathering place for young people. At night they kept the place hopping so that off-duty policemen had to be hired to patrol the lot and manage traffic on weekends.
Joe was a father figure to many of the young people, but he also enforced the rules. He banned those who didn’t behave, then had to deal with their parents when they called to plead the case for their misbehaving children.
An added attraction for a number of years was the WMFD radio broadcast from an elevated glass booth in the Miljo parking lot. The DJ played song requests, read local high school announcements,
and commented on who was “cruising the Joe.” Parents often tuned in to find out where their kids were.
