Union Rescue Squad
In North Carolina, trained medical personnel have been providing emergency services to hospitals since the 1970s, but that meant a long waiting period for people in northern Pender County. So, residents decided to form their own rescue squad. The Union Rescue Squad was formed by a group of firemen from the Penderlea Community after residents of the Willard and Watha areas of Pender County decided the only way they would get medical assistance quickly was to form their own rescue squad. After receiving training from Cape Fear Community College, the squad was state certified in October, 1981.
